Amateur radio is the original wireless internet — it does not need a tower, a carrier, a subscription, or a permission slip from a phone company. From a cabin at 3,800' in the High Country, a Technician-class operator can reach Charlotte, Knoxville, Roanoke, and the next county over with a handheld and a 5-watt signal. Start here

If you have never keyed up a radio, start at the bottom. The Technician license is the front door; the General and Amateur Extra are upstairs.

Amateur radio in the United States is administered by the Federal Communications Commission under Part 97. There are three license classes — Technician, General, and Amateur Extra — each earned by passing a multiple-choice exam administered by a Volunteer Examiner team. The tests are not hard; they are 35 questions drawn from a public question pool, and the passing grade is 26/35. Most people study for two to four weekends and pass on the first try.

Why botherThe reasons that survive a bad day

The reasons to get licensed have not changed since the 1930s, even though the technology has. The radio does not depend on the internet, the power grid, the cell network, or any one piece of hardware. When everything else is down, a Technician with a handheld, a battery, and a 5-watt signal can still call for help. That is not theoretical — it has happened in North Carolina after every hurricane since at least Fran in 1996.

The reasons that have changed are the hobby reasons. Modern digital modes (FT8, JS8Call, VARA, Winlink) let a 100-watt station work the world on a wire antenna in a backyard. SDRs (software-defined radios) have collapsed the price of gear: a $30 USB dongle covers 24 MHz to 1.7 GHz. The entry cost in 2026 is lower than it was in 2010 and a tenth of what it was in 1990.

What you can doPrivileges by class

  • Technician — all amateur privileges above 50 MHz (VHF, UHF, microwave). Limited HF on 10 meters (28.0–28.5 MHz) and CW on 80, 40, 15 meters. 1,500 W maximum output. Enough to talk across Avery County and into the next three counties via repeaters, plus some weak-signal work on 6m and 2m.
  • General — unlocks most HF bands: 160, 80, 40, 20, 17, 15, 12, and 10 meters, plus 6m. This is the "talk to the world" license. A 100-watt General station with a wire antenna in a backyard can work 100+ countries on FT8 in a year.
  • Amateur Extra — the full 1,500 W on every band, plus exclusive sub-bands and shorter call signs. Useful for chasing DX (long-distance contacts) and contesting. Not necessary to enjoy the hobby.

The honest path. Get the Technician first. Use it for six months. If you find yourself wanting to talk further than VHF/UHF will carry, study for General. The license upgrades stack — you do not retake the Technician exam; you take the higher class and your existing license converts.

Getting licensed

Study, find a test session, take the test, get a call sign, get on the air. The whole cycle fits inside two weekends.

StudySix weeks of evenings, or two weekends of focus

The Technician question pool is 428 questions; the test draws 35. The pass mark is 26/35 (74%). All 428 questions are public at ncvec.org; the multiple-choice answers are also public. The fastest way to study is hamstudy.org, which is free, mobile-friendly, and tracks which questions you keep missing. Most people pass on 80–100% of the practice tests in two weeks of evening study.

TestFree, in person, 30 minutes

Test sessions are run by Volunteer Examiner teams. The fee is around $15 to cover the paperwork; the FCC license itself is free. Sessions in the High Country happen quarterly at the Avery County Emergency Operations Center and at festivals (Smoky Mountain Hamfest in April is the closest large one). Bring a photo ID, your FRN if you have one (free at fcc.gov), and a pencil.

Call signFrom the FCC, in your email, within a week

After you pass, the VEs submit your paperwork to the FCC. Your call sign arrives by email within 5–10 business days. The call sign is a one- to six-character identifier that becomes your radio identity; it stays with you for life (with the right to renew on upgrade or by request). NC is in the 4-land call-sign region, so a new Tech in 2026 will likely get a KO4-prefix or KQ4-prefix call sign.

Get on the airBefore you buy anything, listen

The cheapest first radio is a Baofeng UV-5R (around $30 new, $15 used) covering 2m and 70cm. It is not the best radio, but it is good enough to program local repeaters and listen. The better first radio is a Yaesu FT-65 or Kenwood TH-D75; both will outlive the Baofeng by years. Buy the Baofeng first; replace it when you know what features you actually use.

NC repeaters worth knowing

A repeater is a radio that listens on one frequency and re-transmits on another, simultaneously, from a high site. The High Country has unusually good repeater coverage because the high ridges act as natural antenna towers.

The repeaters below are the ones that will work from a cabin in Avery County on a 5-watt handheld. The frequencies are 2m (VHF, 144–148 MHz) and 70cm (UHF, 420–450 MHz) — the Technician's main bands. The PL tone (sub-audible tone) is required to access the repeater; program it into your radio before transmitting.

Verify frequencies and PL tones against the current ARRL Repeater Directory or RepeaterBook before transmitting. The list above is verified as of August 2026; repeater owners do change hardware and tones, and a stale database will get you a silent repeater and a wrong assumption.

Skywarn. The National Weather Service in Greer, SC runs a Skywarn net every time severe weather threatens western NC. Check in if you have a weather report; the net is also where new operators learn to push-to-talk without freezing. The net control station is unfailingly patient with first-timers. Recommended before any other on-air activity.

Antennas and band choices

Antenna gain matters more than transmit power. A 5-watt signal on a good antenna will out-perform a 50-watt signal on a rubber duck.

For the handheldReplace the rubber duck first

The antenna that ships with a Baofeng is a compromise. The single biggest upgrade you can make to a handheld is the antenna. The Nagoya NA-771 is a $20 15.6-inch whip that doubles the effective range of the radio. The Diamond SRH77CA is the $40 version of the same idea, slightly better built. Both are SMA-male, fitting Baofengs and most modern handhelds.

For the cabinA magnetic-mount or roll-up J-pole

For a stationary cabin, the cheapest improvement is a 2m/70cm magnetic-mount antenna on a cookie sheet on the roof. The cookie sheet is the ground plane; the magnetic mount antenna is the radiator. Total cost around $60, effective range improves 3–5x over the handheld's rubber duck.

For real range, build a roll-up J-pole out of 450-ohm ladder line. The J-pole is a $10 antenna with the gain of a $100 commercial vertical. It rolls up to fit in a pocket, hangs from a tree branch, and works 2m and 70cm simultaneously. There are dozens of YouTube videos on building one in under an hour.

2m · 144–148 MHz

Local & repeaters

The workhorse band for VHF. Repeaters, simplex chat, APRS (position reporting), packet. From a ridge in Avery, talk to anywhere within 50–80 miles via repeater. 5W handheld gets you there.

70cm · 420–450 MHz

UHF local, IRLP, AllStar

Smaller antennas, more repeaters, more linked systems. Less long-range than 2m, but the UHF repeater network is denser in the High Country. DMR hotspots live here.

6m · 50–54 MHz

Magic band

Sporadic-E propagation opens this band to nationwide contacts a few times a year. When it opens, a Technician with 10W and a vertical can work 1,000+ miles. When it doesn't, it's dead quiet. Watch the propagation reports.

10m · 28–29.7 MHz

HF for Techs (limited)

Techs have voice and CW privileges on 28.0–28.5 MHz, which is enough to play on 10m when the solar cycle is hot. Cycle 25 peaked in 2024–2025; 10m is in a slow fade. Worth a try; not the workhorse.

2m SSB / CW

Weak signal, long distance

Single-sideband on 2m opens long-distance contacts via tropo, meteor scatter, and aurora. Technician operators can do this. The work happens on calling frequencies (144.200 MHz SSB, 144.100 MHz CW) and is the most fun you can have with a 50W radio and a 5-element Yagi.

DMR / D-STAR / Fusion

Digital voice

The three competing digital voice modes. DMR is the most popular in NC; Fusion is Yaesu's system; D-STAR is Icom's. Pick a radio that supports at least one; many support two. Digital repeaters are linked globally; you can talk to Tokyo from a $200 handheld on DMR.

Skywarn activationThe most useful first net

The National Weather Service activates Skywarn when severe weather threatens. The Greer, SC office covers western NC. The Skywarn net is the single best way to learn net etiquette (key up, identify, listen, transmit, identify, sign clear) and to be useful in the community on day one. Most of the active operators in Avery County check into the Skywarn net at least once a season; many check in more often.

ARES / RACESWhen the cell network is down

Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) and Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES) are the two organized emergency communications groups. In North Carolina, ARES is coordinated through ARRL sections; RACES is the federally-recognized counterpart. Avery County ARES is small but active. Joining the local ARES group is the fastest way to learn the local repeater coverage, the local weather patterns, and the people who have been doing this for thirty years.

Field dayLast full weekend of June, every year

ARRL Field Day is the largest amateur radio event in North America. The High Country clubs (Smoky Mountains, Blue Ridge, Foothills) all set up portable stations in public parks, run on generator power, and make as many contacts as possible in 24 hours. Field Day is the best weekend of the year to meet other operators, see every radio you might want to buy, and learn the parts of the hobby that don't fit on a YouTube video.

POTA / SOTAOperating from the trail

Parks on the Air (POTA) and Summits on the Air (SOTA) are award programs for operating portable from public parks and summits. The High Country is unusually well-endowed with both: Grandfather Mountain, Roan Mountain, and Mount Mitchell are all SOTA summits with public access; the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Pisgah National Forest are POTA entities. Operating from a summit with a wire antenna and a 5-watt signal is the most fun you can have in amateur radio for under $300 of gear.

The discipline the hobby teaches. Amateur radio is the only hobby in the empire that is also an emergency service, a propagation laboratory, an electronics class, a community of patient mentors, and a long-distance sport. It scales from a $30 handheld to a $30,000 home station. It rewards careful operators and punishes the careless. It is, in many ways, what the rest of the empire is trying to build in software: a small, durable, low-cost, low-friction system that compounds over decades. Get the license. Get on the air. The first contact is the one you remember.
